CD audio “Heigh, on the Black Sea...” – kobza-lyric tradition. Mykola Budnik. Folk bandura. AVE 008
Father of Kyiv kobza guild Mykola Budnik was one among rare bearers of deep understanding authentic kobza playing. Traditional repertory of folk bandura-player: duma “Pro Oleksija Popovicha”, “Pro marusju Boguslavku”, historic songs “Pobratavsja sokil”, “Pro Savu Chalogo” is represented on the disk. Character and timbre of Budnil meloreditations, his sincere and loud, quasi “not from this world” voice, brings listener in mystic world of historic characters and events. His performance is not a music character, placed on Procrustean bed of music-rhythmic form, but rather the mode of talk with listener, complete and organic saying- confession, which continues till sense of complete understanding and satisfaction from said and sung will have appeared.

CD audio - "Lullabies". AVE 017
One of the archaic and powerful means of folk protection of a child’s night sleep is a shield - melody. Motherly love, embodied in a lullaby, is such power, which is able to neutralise any evil activity around a child. A mother asks for this power every time she addresses ancestors – guardians of a family. According to scientists, a mother’s voice itself is endowed with magic power to shield the space around a child from harmful evil force, creating a protective magic circle within the radius of sound. The striking examples of authentic lullabies from different regions of Ukraine are presented on the CD. These shield-songs, which for centuries used to be passed from mothers and grandmothers to their children, were recorded during the ethnographical expeditions to Ukrainian villages and are inexhaustible source of scientific study as well as a unique opportunity for contemporary mums to listen and later sing a true lullaby to their babies. Gradual dying off of pagan beliefs led, in the course of time, to forgetting the initial context of lullabies, that is why, it is no wonder, that contemporary mums do not even suspect how deep, magically-protective the meaning of a lullaby really is. By singing “A grey kitten”, they let their love overflow onto their babies and thank God for his greatest and the most valuable gift to a woman.
